1
00:01:30,079 --> 00:01:41,840
make it easy but you live longer

2
00:01:42,479 --> 00:01:45,200
that crazy kid all right mac you can go

3
00:01:45,235 --> 00:01:46,044
on

4
00:01:46,079 --> 00:01:55,840
anybody get in touch with you

5
00:02:03,840 --> 00:02:08,364
they're lucky

6
00:02:08,399 --> 00:02:11,199
there's something still in one piece

7
00:02:11,234 --> 00:02:14,000
open it see if we can get a line on it

8
00:02:16,879 --> 00:02:20,560
just about made out his license number

9
00:02:20,840 --> 00:02:21,965
501-777

10
00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:24,720
lucky number check with motor vehicles

11
00:02:24,755 --> 00:02:26,640
see who gets the prize

12
00:02:26,675 --> 00:02:29,440
chef remembers

13
00:02:32,800 --> 00:02:37,085
what do you make of this

14
00:02:37,120 --> 00:02:38,720
some kind of gimmick to make his car go

15
00:02:38,755 --> 00:02:40,284
faster maybe

16
00:02:40,319 --> 00:02:42,560
that's no part of a car that's for sure

17
00:02:42,595 --> 00:02:44,125
well whatever it is

18
00:02:44,160 --> 00:02:46,480
he won't be using it must have been

19
00:02:46,515 --> 00:02:48,924
important to hide under a hood

20
00:02:48,959 --> 00:02:50,239
are you getting one of your hunches

21
00:02:50,274 --> 00:02:51,965
again well

22
00:02:52,000 --> 00:02:53,680
looks like he was sneaking in doesn't it

23
00:02:53,715 --> 00:02:55,325
where to

24
00:02:55,360 --> 00:02:57,920
i don't know if i knew what it was and i

25
00:02:57,955 --> 00:02:59,085
could tell

26
00:02:59,120 --> 00:03:00,880
all right let's just tell you what on

27
00:03:00,915 --> 00:03:02,640
the way back we'll stop in to see that

28
00:03:02,675 --> 00:03:05,017
federal man assigned to this area

29
00:03:05,052 --> 00:03:07,360
i think his name is william knowing

30
00:03:07,395 --> 00:03:09,245
lester here and his hunches

31
00:03:09,280 --> 00:03:11,599
i figure i might as well humor him he

32
00:03:11,634 --> 00:03:14,204
did a hit with army ordinance

33
00:03:14,239 --> 00:03:16,720
well i'm not much of an engineer myself

34
00:03:16,755 --> 00:03:17,965
i think it's some kind of a gun

35
00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:20,799
mechanism not far from the lab at los

36
00:03:20,834 --> 00:03:23,599
alamos why don't we take it over to them

37
00:03:23,634 --> 00:03:27,805
good idea los alamos new mexico

38
00:03:27,840 --> 00:03:30,240
a united states experimental center for

39
00:03:30,275 --> 00:03:32,640
military applications of atomic energy

40
00:03:32,675 --> 00:03:34,560
no alcatraz of fort knox was ever

41
00:03:34,595 --> 00:03:37,245
guarded more closely

42
00:03:37,280 --> 00:03:39,040
there it stands in a mesa above the new

43
00:03:39,075 --> 00:03:41,200
mexico desert like some slumbering

44
00:03:41,235 --> 00:03:42,685
volcano

45
00:03:42,720 --> 00:03:44,480
its power and its secrets held deep

46
00:03:44,515 --> 00:03:46,204
within its walls

47
00:03:46,239 --> 00:03:48,560
its operations many and buried may not

48
00:03:48,595 --> 00:03:51,217
be described for security reasons

49
00:03:51,252 --> 00:03:53,586
but this much can be said here at los

50
00:03:53,621 --> 00:03:55,920
alamos has found the cream of scientific

51
00:03:55,955 --> 00:03:57,085
genius

52
00:03:57,120 --> 00:03:59,279
the physicists and engineers who design

53
00:03:59,314 --> 00:04:01,439
and develop nuclear components of atomic

54
00:04:01,474 --> 00:04:02,605
weapons

55
00:04:02,640 --> 00:04:04,239
who are responsible for detonating

56
00:04:04,274 --> 00:04:05,965
completed weapon assemblies

57
00:04:06,000 --> 00:04:09,085
and measuring results overnight the

58
00:04:09,120 --> 00:04:10,879
contents of the mysterious case will put

59
00:04:10,914 --> 00:04:12,204
through the works

60
00:04:12,239 --> 00:04:14,159
its practical characteristics examined

61
00:04:14,194 --> 00:04:16,079
and studied is against the theory of

62
00:04:16,114 --> 00:04:17,965
engineering principles

63
00:04:18,000 --> 00:04:20,640
no part was left untouched unrecorded

64
00:04:20,675 --> 00:04:23,177
they were out to find out what made it

65
00:04:23,212 --> 00:04:25,246
tick but they were taking no chances of

66
00:04:25,281 --> 00:04:27,280
not being able to fit the pieces back in

67
00:04:27,315 --> 00:04:28,685
place again

68
00:04:28,720 --> 00:04:30,080
this was one humpty dumpty they'd be

69
00:04:30,115 --> 00:04:32,604
able to put together again

70
00:04:32,639 --> 00:04:34,359
although williams never had any idea

71
00:04:34,394 --> 00:04:36,080
that the jigsaw puzzle brought to him by

72
00:04:36,115 --> 00:04:37,164
sheriff ramirez

73
00:04:37,199 --> 00:04:39,840
had any connection with atomic energy he

74
00:04:39,875 --> 00:04:42,045
came to the right place

75
00:04:42,080 --> 00:04:44,240
that innocent little bag of machinery

76
00:04:44,275 --> 00:04:45,884
was a brand new idea

77
00:04:45,919 --> 00:04:49,005
in atom bombs a portable affair

78
00:04:49,040 --> 00:04:51,199
so engineered it can be carried into the

79
00:04:51,234 --> 00:04:52,845
country in separate parts

80
00:04:52,880 --> 00:04:55,360
each part weighing less than 50 pounds

81
00:04:55,395 --> 00:04:57,840
sounds like a science fiction plot

82
00:04:57,875 --> 00:05:01,137
doesn't well this one is true

83
00:05:01,172 --> 00:05:04,365
quite true what about the force

84
00:05:04,400 --> 00:05:06,639
would it still pack the same punch size

85
00:05:06,674 --> 00:05:08,925
is no longer a factor mr williams

86
00:05:08,960 --> 00:05:11,440
we're dealing with the atom a speck and

87
00:05:11,475 --> 00:05:12,125
each speck

88
00:05:12,160 --> 00:05:14,560
loaded with infinite power a kind of

89
00:05:14,595 --> 00:05:16,960
power that can kick a million tons of

90
00:05:16,995 --> 00:05:19,884
water out of bikini lagoon

91
00:05:19,919 --> 00:05:22,400
or right out of the panama canal does

92
00:05:22,435 --> 00:05:25,085
that make any sense mr williams

93
00:05:25,120 --> 00:05:26,479
enough to know what it can do in the

94
00:05:26,514 --> 00:05:37,970
wrong hands

95
00:05:41,919 --> 00:05:44,080
the atomic energy commission using its

96
00:05:44,115 --> 00:05:46,125
most recently developed a bomb

97
00:05:46,160 --> 00:05:47,919
set off a blast the following morning at

98
00:05:47,954 --> 00:05:49,485
frenchman's flat nevada

99
00:05:49,520 --> 00:05:52,400
100 miles from las vegas the reactions

100
00:05:52,435 --> 00:05:54,977
throughout the country were mixed

101
00:05:55,012 --> 00:05:57,520
ranging from jokes to serious comet

102
00:05:58,400 --> 00:06:00,240
in las vegas one of the players in the

103
00:06:00,275 --> 00:06:02,080
casino lost claiming the blast had

104
00:06:02,115 --> 00:06:03,485
rocked a roulette wheel

105
00:06:03,520 --> 00:06:06,240
doing him out of a winner in washington

106
00:06:06,275 --> 00:06:07,085
dc

107
00:06:07,120 --> 00:06:08,765
paul regan chief of the security

108
00:06:08,800 --> 00:06:11,039
investigation division had his own ideas

109
00:06:11,074 --> 00:06:12,444
about the incident

110
00:06:12,479 --> 00:06:15,805
this time we chose the spot

111
00:06:15,840 --> 00:06:17,440
tomorrow it could be right out that

112
00:06:17,475 --> 00:06:21,840
window for los alamos

113
00:06:22,080 --> 00:06:25,645
a boy may be the answer well

114
00:06:25,680 --> 00:06:27,799
there's an answer somewhere my own guess

115
00:06:27,834 --> 00:06:29,919
is that the case was smuggled over the

116
00:06:29,954 --> 00:06:31,485
mexican border

117
00:06:31,520 --> 00:06:33,120
went out on its way to the mexican

118
00:06:33,155 --> 00:06:34,604
border

119
00:06:34,639 --> 00:06:35,840
well for one thing he was headed in the

120
00:06:35,875 --> 00:06:38,525
opposite direction when he crashed

121
00:06:38,560 --> 00:06:40,680
maybe he lost his way not according to a

122
00:06:40,715 --> 00:06:42,800
check of gas stations leading from the

123
00:06:42,835 --> 00:06:44,125
border

124
00:06:44,160 --> 00:06:46,319
he stopped to gas up a few times that

125
00:06:46,354 --> 00:06:48,479
sheriff and his staff working on it

126
00:06:48,514 --> 00:06:51,965
yes sir funny

127
00:06:52,000 --> 00:06:55,120
job like that would be trusted to a kid

128
00:06:55,155 --> 00:06:59,405
why not who'd suspect a lamb

129
00:06:59,440 --> 00:07:01,599
well it's your lamb from now on johnny

130
00:07:01,634 --> 00:07:03,497
i'm transferring you from the new mexico

131
00:07:03,532 --> 00:07:05,360
field office and assigning you full time

132
00:07:05,395 --> 00:07:06,045
to this job

133
00:07:06,080 --> 00:07:09,405
so double check to make sure

134
00:07:09,440 --> 00:07:11,280
you know these are no ordinary thugs

135
00:07:11,315 --> 00:07:13,217
like you get on income tax evasion but

136
00:07:13,252 --> 00:07:15,120
fanatics who consider it a privilege to

137
00:07:15,155 --> 00:07:16,604
die resources

138
00:07:16,639 --> 00:07:19,799
tricks and genius on their side run down

139
00:07:19,834 --> 00:07:22,960
every move that kid made up to the crash

140
00:07:22,995 --> 00:07:26,400
i'll keep figuring from this end

141
00:07:26,880 --> 00:07:31,085
good luck thanks

142
00:07:31,120 --> 00:07:32,444
but all that led to was a lot of

143
00:07:32,479 --> 00:07:34,960
exercise according to the boy's friends

144
00:07:34,995 --> 00:07:36,685
he was okay in their book

145
00:07:36,720 --> 00:07:38,599
tough break for jonesy being measured

146
00:07:38,634 --> 00:07:40,479
for a cough instead of the gi uniform he

147
00:07:40,514 --> 00:07:41,840
was scheduled to put on next month

148
00:07:43,280 --> 00:07:45,520
they dug way back in jonesy's background

149
00:07:45,555 --> 00:07:46,525
talked to his minister

150
00:07:46,560 --> 00:07:48,720
his school teacher his former employers

151
00:07:48,755 --> 00:07:50,365
and girlfriends

152
00:07:50,400 --> 00:07:52,080
but nobody had a bad word to say against

153
00:07:52,115 --> 00:07:54,604
jonesy nobody but his mother

154
00:07:54,639 --> 00:07:56,079
that was only out of bitterness for the

155
00:07:56,114 --> 00:07:57,520
face which had snuffed out so young

156
00:07:57,555 --> 00:07:58,925
alive

157
00:07:58,960 --> 00:08:00,560
a life that cared about nothing except

158
00:08:00,595 --> 00:08:03,919
racing cars and motorcycles

159
00:08:04,080 --> 00:08:07,405
racing cars and motorcycles

160
00:08:07,440 --> 00:08:09,039
that kind of a hobby takes money where'd

161
00:08:09,074 --> 00:08:11,120
he get it odd jobs when he wasn't

162
00:08:11,155 --> 00:08:12,844
working steady

163
00:08:12,879 --> 00:08:14,879
that would just about pay for the gas

164
00:08:14,914 --> 00:08:16,879
i'm beginning to think he didn't know

165
00:08:16,914 --> 00:08:18,765
what he was delivering

166
00:08:18,800 --> 00:08:21,600
and i'm beginning to think you were

167
00:08:21,635 --> 00:08:24,400
right the first time nobody'd suspect a

168
00:08:24,840 --> 00:08:27,325
lamb

169
00:08:27,360 --> 00:08:29,119
i'm not going to give you the business

170
00:08:29,154 --> 00:08:31,137
that you were hand-picked for this job

171
00:08:31,172 --> 00:08:33,146
you weren't i take it for granted that

172
00:08:33,181 --> 00:08:35,120
every man here is already hand-picked

173
00:08:35,155 --> 00:08:36,524
and qualified

174
00:08:36,559 --> 00:08:39,440
you also know what we're up against and

175
00:08:39,475 --> 00:08:41,839
what it means

176
00:08:46,640 --> 00:08:49,360
our job is intercepting the rest of

177
00:08:49,395 --> 00:08:50,924
those bomb parts

178
00:08:50,959 --> 00:08:53,200
maybe they're all headed into new mexico

179
00:08:53,235 --> 00:08:54,364
maybe not

180
00:08:54,399 --> 00:08:56,720
but wherever their point of assembly is

181
00:08:56,755 --> 00:08:59,920
we've got to stop them

182
00:09:00,640 --> 00:09:03,239
gray alert all stations and field

183
00:09:03,274 --> 00:09:05,839
offices to notify us of any unusual

184
00:09:05,874 --> 00:09:06,685
operations

185
00:09:06,720 --> 00:09:09,360
yes sir as an extra precautionary

186
00:09:09,395 --> 00:09:09,804
measure

187
00:09:09,839 --> 00:09:11,440
we will assign a special detail to the

188
00:09:11,475 --> 00:09:13,537
new mexico area around los alamos

189
00:09:13,572 --> 00:09:15,565
they were lucky with the first

190
00:09:15,600 --> 00:09:17,120
installment on that bomb reagan told

191
00:09:17,155 --> 00:09:17,804
them

192
00:09:17,839 --> 00:09:19,799
next time it might not be so easy

193
00:09:19,834 --> 00:09:21,760
williams studied the setup against

194
00:09:21,795 --> 00:09:24,364
possible infiltration

195
00:09:24,399 --> 00:09:26,160
even the security investigation division

196
00:09:26,195 --> 00:09:27,645
when a side of the operation

197
00:09:27,680 --> 00:09:29,200
was subject to the strict regulations

198
00:09:29,235 --> 00:09:31,085
and security measures

199
00:09:31,120 --> 00:09:32,560
anything was possible when you were

200
00:09:32,595 --> 00:09:34,000
dealing with a bunch who could figure

201
00:09:34,035 --> 00:09:36,045
out a portable bomb

202
00:09:36,080 --> 00:09:38,000
and while special forces were being

203
00:09:38,035 --> 00:09:40,177
concentrated in and around new mexico

204
00:09:40,212 --> 00:09:42,186
waiting for more of the parts to show up

205
00:09:42,221 --> 00:09:44,160
two events occurred to focus attention

206
00:09:44,195 --> 00:09:45,725
elsewhere

207
00:09:45,760 --> 00:09:47,440
first a radar screen operated from a

208
00:09:47,475 --> 00:09:49,005
nearby training camp

209
00:09:49,040 --> 00:09:50,880
reported the presence of an unauthorized

210
00:09:50,915 --> 00:09:53,110
object deep in the louisiana bayous

211
00:10:02,399 --> 00:10:11,119
army sentries went on a search detail

212
00:10:11,154 --> 00:10:19,839
discovered that a helicopter had landed

213
00:10:24,240 --> 00:10:26,240
the pilot was picked up and held for

214
00:10:26,275 --> 00:10:28,240
questioning williams was summoned to new

215
00:10:28,275 --> 00:10:29,085
orleans

216
00:10:29,120 --> 00:10:31,160
identified the pilot's metal there's

217
00:10:31,195 --> 00:10:33,200
another portable section of the dread

218
00:10:33,235 --> 00:10:35,005
bomb

219
00:10:35,040 --> 00:10:36,959
what kind of fools do you take us for

220
00:10:36,994 --> 00:10:38,605
all right so i'm stupid

221
00:10:38,640 --> 00:10:40,560
a guy propositions for me to deliver a

222
00:10:40,595 --> 00:10:42,297
bag and a swamp 500 bucks no questions

223
00:10:42,332 --> 00:10:44,000
asked i take it i didn't know what was

224
00:10:44,035 --> 00:10:46,617
it what did he look like

225
00:10:46,652 --> 00:10:49,200
my heights maybe black hair

226
00:10:49,235 --> 00:10:52,685
mustache i was brown

227
00:10:52,720 --> 00:10:54,559
i don't know for sure what else he might

228
00:10:54,594 --> 00:10:56,399
have been a foreigner he had a french

229
00:10:56,434 --> 00:10:57,325
accent 90

230
00:10:57,360 --> 00:10:58,879
of the cajuns around here speak french

231
00:10:58,914 --> 00:11:01,457
not this way i've lived around here all

232
00:11:01,492 --> 00:11:04,000
my life i'd know if he is this the man

233
00:11:04,079 --> 00:11:06,880
no sir you're telling the truth we'll

234
00:11:06,915 --> 00:11:08,525
find out about it soon enough

235
00:11:08,560 --> 00:11:10,160
if you're not you're a poor excuse for a

236
00:11:10,195 --> 00:11:12,205
citizen i needed the money

237
00:11:12,240 --> 00:11:17,120
is that 500 worth your life your honor

238
00:11:18,640 --> 00:11:22,079
call them for transfer to washington

239
00:11:22,800 --> 00:11:24,320
next it was new york's coney island to

240
00:11:24,355 --> 00:11:26,720
be spotlighted it was sunday the

241
00:11:26,755 --> 00:11:27,885
temperature 90

242
00:11:27,920 --> 00:11:29,600
one of those humid days which new york

243
00:11:29,635 --> 00:11:30,924
is famous

244
00:11:30,959 --> 00:11:32,480
the evening papers would feature record

245
00:11:32,515 --> 00:11:34,044
crowds at coney

246
00:11:34,079 --> 00:11:35,639
and while the millions were having

247
00:11:35,674 --> 00:11:37,200
themselves a time just about a mile

248
00:11:37,235 --> 00:11:38,605
offshore a lifeguard

249
00:11:38,640 --> 00:11:40,519
making a routine inspection of marker

250
00:11:40,554 --> 00:11:42,399
boys was about to play a star role in

251
00:11:42,434 --> 00:11:56,480
the next chapter of the drama

252
00:11:56,515 --> 00:12:11,839
yes sir right away sir

253
00:12:14,959 --> 00:12:16,800
put this thing back where you found it

254
00:12:16,835 --> 00:12:18,525
what is it anyway bait

255
00:12:18,560 --> 00:12:21,400
for a fish i don't get it you don't have

256
00:12:21,435 --> 00:12:24,240
to take my word for it it's important

257
00:12:28,399 --> 00:12:30,000
and be sure you tie it up exactly the

258
00:12:30,035 --> 00:12:31,440
same way you found it

259
00:12:31,475 --> 00:12:33,680
right

260
00:12:34,560 --> 00:12:39,839
this time the bait worked

261
00:12:41,120 --> 00:12:42,720
williams who had flown to the new area

262
00:12:42,755 --> 00:12:44,320
of activity flashed orders to the coast

263
00:12:44,355 --> 00:12:45,885
guard cutter standing by

264
00:12:45,920 --> 00:12:48,399
to reel in their fish again as in the

265
00:12:48,434 --> 00:12:49,725
case of the helicopter pilot the

266
00:12:49,760 --> 00:12:51,680
fishermen claim to be the innocent duke

267
00:12:51,715 --> 00:12:53,497
he had been approached by a stranger at

268
00:12:53,532 --> 00:12:55,085
the fulton street market during a period

269
00:12:55,120 --> 00:12:56,639
last week when the fish weren't running

270
00:12:56,674 --> 00:12:57,244
well

271
00:12:57,279 --> 00:12:59,279
five hundred dollars he gives to me to

272
00:12:59,314 --> 00:13:01,279
pick up satchel what did he look like

273
00:13:01,314 --> 00:13:04,525
big like him is this a man

274
00:13:04,560 --> 00:13:07,440
oh no he had gray hair he had blue jeans

275
00:13:07,475 --> 00:13:10,320
all i got to do is deliver central to

276
00:13:10,355 --> 00:13:11,725
locker 12 o'clock

277
00:13:11,760 --> 00:13:16,399
what blocker pennsylvania station number

278
00:13:32,839 --> 00:13:35,839
uh

279
00:14:03,279 --> 00:14:06,519
what is this i don't understand

280
00:14:06,554 --> 00:14:09,725
what do you expect to find in that

281
00:14:09,760 --> 00:14:11,920
locker present i bought for the children

282
00:14:11,955 --> 00:14:13,680
some salt water taffy

283
00:14:13,715 --> 00:14:17,839
open it

284
00:14:19,680 --> 00:14:23,360
so nervous i can't get the key to fit

285
00:14:23,395 --> 00:14:31,839
give me

286
00:14:38,079 --> 00:14:45,839
at least i had the wrong locker

287
00:14:49,839 --> 00:14:52,560
all right mister

288
00:14:55,760 --> 00:14:59,839
well it's 7 after 12.

289
00:15:00,240 --> 00:15:02,160
it's a pretty small box for a locker

290
00:15:02,195 --> 00:15:04,800
this size

291
00:15:05,440 --> 00:15:12,990
that's our man get him

292
00:15:28,079 --> 00:15:30,399
smart downright smart nothing left to

293
00:15:30,434 --> 00:15:31,325
chance

294
00:15:31,360 --> 00:15:32,560
i tried to warn you they weren't

295
00:15:32,595 --> 00:15:35,120
amateurs

296
00:15:38,079 --> 00:15:40,479
hello emily hi well get that fisherman

297
00:15:40,514 --> 00:15:42,417
to do any talking oh he didn't know any

298
00:15:42,452 --> 00:15:44,466
more about it than the pilot did all i

299
00:15:44,501 --> 00:15:46,130
was interested in was making a fast buck

300
00:15:46,165 --> 00:15:48,242
how about you do you get that thing to

301
00:15:48,277 --> 00:15:50,320
do any talking first time i performed an

302
00:15:50,355 --> 00:15:53,005
autopsy on a satchel

303
00:15:53,040 --> 00:15:56,240
well it's galvanized iron common variety

304
00:15:56,275 --> 00:15:59,440
any check is to manufacture european

305
00:15:59,475 --> 00:16:01,484
make i believe

306
00:16:01,519 --> 00:16:02,880
i've been trying to find out its

307
00:16:02,915 --> 00:16:04,845
resistance to seawater

308
00:16:04,880 --> 00:16:06,639
now these strips have been soaking in a

309
00:16:06,674 --> 00:16:08,160
solution of seawater for different

310
00:16:08,195 --> 00:16:09,645
lengths of time

311
00:16:09,680 --> 00:16:12,560
now this one has been soaking for 12

312
00:16:12,595 --> 00:16:14,924
hours

313
00:16:14,959 --> 00:16:19,039
and this one

314
00:16:19,074 --> 00:16:23,085
for 24. and uh

315
00:16:23,120 --> 00:16:27,005
this a little over 48.

316
00:16:27,040 --> 00:16:29,080
you'll notice that it matches the side

317
00:16:29,115 --> 00:16:31,085
of the case when it was pulled out

318
00:16:31,120 --> 00:16:32,800
in other words the case had been soaking

319
00:16:32,835 --> 00:16:34,364
for over 48 hours

320
00:16:34,399 --> 00:16:36,599
just about new york harbor being just

321
00:16:36,634 --> 00:16:38,677
back of coney island it could have been

322
00:16:38,712 --> 00:16:40,720
dropped off by any incoming ship you got

323
00:16:40,755 --> 00:16:41,885
a paper yeah

324
00:16:41,920 --> 00:16:44,399
incoming from where any european port

325
00:16:44,434 --> 00:16:45,085
here we are

326
00:16:45,120 --> 00:16:48,320
48 hours of plants

327
00:16:55,120 --> 00:16:58,000
48 hours 48 hours before we picked up

328
00:16:58,035 --> 00:17:00,880
the case the french liner felicitate

329
00:17:00,915 --> 00:17:01,484
docked

330
00:17:01,519 --> 00:17:03,319
but it didn't stop at coney island no it

331
00:17:03,354 --> 00:17:04,836
didn't but it could have passed a motor

332
00:17:04,871 --> 00:17:06,235
launch or even a rowboat could have

333
00:17:06,270 --> 00:17:07,599
picked up the case and anchored it to

334
00:17:07,634 --> 00:17:09,918
the boy

335
00:17:10,160 --> 00:17:12,559
maybe maybe it's a mistake to keep it

336
00:17:12,594 --> 00:17:13,564
out of the papers

337
00:17:13,599 --> 00:17:15,279
and not to let the public know what

338
00:17:15,314 --> 00:17:16,959
they're up against why shouldn't they

339
00:17:16,994 --> 00:17:18,044
know that the same little

340
00:17:18,079 --> 00:17:20,999
firecracker we develop might be dropped

341
00:17:21,034 --> 00:17:23,996
right into our own backyard anytime

342
00:17:24,031 --> 00:17:26,959
maybe even a better one smaller more

343
00:17:26,994 --> 00:17:29,085
powerful

344
00:17:29,120 --> 00:17:30,720
it wouldn't take too many of them to

345
00:17:30,755 --> 00:17:33,840
paralyze us

346
00:17:34,640 --> 00:17:36,559
hanford washington where plutonium for

347
00:17:36,594 --> 00:17:37,884
the a-bomb is produced

348
00:17:37,919 --> 00:17:40,239
the half-mile long k-25 planted oak

349
00:17:40,274 --> 00:17:42,857
ridge tennessee producers of uranium

350
00:17:42,892 --> 00:17:45,440
los alamos main arteries like los

351
00:17:45,475 --> 00:17:46,045
angeles

352
00:17:46,080 --> 00:17:49,080
pittsburgh washington and new york with

353
00:17:49,115 --> 00:17:52,080
its teaming millions and the harbor

354
00:17:52,320 --> 00:17:57,679
just a few prize packages can do it

355
00:17:58,799 --> 00:18:01,965
but don't take my word for it

356
00:18:02,000 --> 00:18:04,080
mr sands here is an expert on civil

357
00:18:04,115 --> 00:18:05,965
defense

358
00:18:06,000 --> 00:18:08,480
rather than just tell you i brought over

359
00:18:08,515 --> 00:18:09,725
some film

360
00:18:09,760 --> 00:18:11,280
to show you what'll happen if the atom

361
00:18:11,315 --> 00:18:13,165
bomb hits this country

362
00:18:13,200 --> 00:18:15,280
now you'll get an idea what we're up

363
00:18:15,315 --> 00:18:17,165
against if we fail to bring in

364
00:18:17,200 --> 00:18:21,360
every single part of that portable bomb

365
00:18:23,520 --> 00:18:25,919
and while we're talking here planning

366
00:18:25,954 --> 00:18:27,565
and wondering

367
00:18:27,600 --> 00:18:31,120
they may be ready now

368
00:18:33,440 --> 00:18:36,480
it'll be any american city some normal

369
00:18:36,515 --> 00:18:37,245
day around

370
00:18:37,280 --> 00:18:40,080
noon maybe people looking for work

371
00:18:40,115 --> 00:18:42,880
others working kids coming home from

372
00:18:42,915 --> 00:18:44,125
school

373
00:18:44,160 --> 00:18:47,440
rush hour when with no

374
00:18:47,475 --> 00:18:49,840
warning

375
00:18:53,520 --> 00:18:55,640
those caught within the epicenter the

376
00:18:55,675 --> 00:18:57,760
area extending for one mile from the

377
00:18:57,795 --> 00:18:59,565
point where the bomb hit

378
00:18:59,600 --> 00:19:02,920
are dead nothing is likely to survive

379
00:19:02,955 --> 00:19:05,557
winds build up to 800 miles an hour tear

380
00:19:05,592 --> 00:19:08,160
through like knives blowing out windows

381
00:19:08,195 --> 00:19:10,120
twisting steel is everywhere straw

382
00:19:11,360 --> 00:19:14,080
and even outside the epicenter buildings

383
00:19:14,115 --> 00:19:14,445
are left

384
00:19:14,480 --> 00:19:17,965
gutted destroyed warehouses

385
00:19:18,000 --> 00:19:20,240
factories brick homes pushed off their

386
00:19:20,275 --> 00:19:21,325
bases

387
00:19:21,360 --> 00:19:25,039
stripped of walls an entire city

388
00:19:25,074 --> 00:19:27,360
suddenly reduced to rubble

389
00:19:32,160 --> 00:19:35,280
thanks mr samson

390
00:19:36,960 --> 00:19:41,039
any questions not answered by that

391
00:19:42,640 --> 00:19:44,240
any idea where they might turn up next

392
00:19:44,275 --> 00:19:45,725
where they might be coming from

393
00:19:45,760 --> 00:19:48,400
who knows so far they've tried getting

394
00:19:48,435 --> 00:19:49,245
in by land

395
00:19:49,280 --> 00:19:52,320
sea and there one thing assured won't be

396
00:19:52,355 --> 00:19:55,457
any single concentration as we thought

397
00:19:55,492 --> 00:19:58,559
they could show up anywhere the password

398
00:19:58,594 --> 00:19:59,565
became

399
00:19:59,600 --> 00:20:02,159
on your toes everything and everyone

400
00:20:02,194 --> 00:20:03,805
became suspect

401
00:20:03,840 --> 00:20:06,080
from the pacific to the atlantic coast

402
00:20:06,115 --> 00:20:07,884
straight up into the sky

403
00:20:07,919 --> 00:20:09,919
deep into the heart of the country

404
00:20:09,954 --> 00:20:11,325
watchful eyes watched

405
00:20:11,360 --> 00:20:14,524
and probed and checked and hunted

406
00:20:14,559 --> 00:20:16,599
wherever there were satchels and pieces

407
00:20:16,634 --> 00:20:18,797
of luggage wherever there were parcels

408
00:20:18,832 --> 00:20:20,960
on the move and as the net was tightened

409
00:20:20,995 --> 00:20:22,045
and pulled in

410
00:20:22,080 --> 00:20:24,360
there were results one metal suitcase

411
00:20:24,395 --> 00:20:26,757
was found in the possession of a sailor

412
00:20:26,792 --> 00:20:28,876
shipped home from a mediterranean harbor

413
00:20:28,911 --> 00:20:30,960
an abandoned baby carriage accounted for

414
00:20:30,995 --> 00:20:32,365
another

415
00:20:32,400 --> 00:20:34,320
but not all the go-betweens had to be

416
00:20:34,355 --> 00:20:35,977
routed out one of them developed a case

417
00:20:36,012 --> 00:20:38,085
of conscience and delivered the satchel

418
00:20:38,120 --> 00:20:39,899
to a local precinct of his own accord

419
00:20:39,934 --> 00:20:41,687
another one became panic stricken and

420
00:20:41,722 --> 00:20:43,700
dumped it into an empty lot where some

421
00:20:43,735 --> 00:20:45,547
kids would later find it and bring it in

422
00:20:45,582 --> 00:20:47,360
hey there's lots of activity going on in

423
00:20:47,395 --> 00:20:49,565
there

424
00:20:49,600 --> 00:20:53,039
hey cooper daily ledger something big

425
00:20:53,074 --> 00:20:54,764
going on

426
00:20:54,799 --> 00:20:57,039
not a thing cooper just a routine

427
00:20:57,074 --> 00:20:59,485
security check

428
00:20:59,520 --> 00:21:01,599
where'd you get the bag from a woman at

429
00:21:01,634 --> 00:21:03,679
the bar come on come on you can think of

430
00:21:03,714 --> 00:21:04,685
a better one than that

431
00:21:04,720 --> 00:21:07,360
may i never live to see my wife honestly

432
00:21:07,395 --> 00:21:08,445
what's your business

433
00:21:08,480 --> 00:21:11,120
i'm in between right now yeah in between

434
00:21:11,155 --> 00:21:13,897
the devil and the deep blue sea

435
00:21:13,932 --> 00:21:16,640
two felony convictions parole

436
00:21:31,360 --> 00:21:33,919
sometimes comic sometimes tragic the

437
00:21:33,954 --> 00:21:36,205
search went on

438
00:21:36,240 --> 00:21:37,959
and like the other parts it found its

439
00:21:37,994 --> 00:21:39,679
way to the weapons laboratory at los

440
00:21:39,714 --> 00:21:40,285
alamos

441
00:21:40,320 --> 00:21:41,760
where the display was taking on

442
00:21:41,795 --> 00:21:43,325
frightening proportions

443
00:21:43,360 --> 00:21:46,000
six parts six guesses four of them

444
00:21:46,035 --> 00:21:48,605
exactly the same even the weight

445
00:21:48,640 --> 00:21:50,480
that means they have four prize packages

446
00:21:50,515 --> 00:21:52,845
planned at least

447
00:21:52,880 --> 00:21:55,200
the other two totally different sections

448
00:21:55,235 --> 00:21:57,377
but all part of the same pattern

449
00:21:57,412 --> 00:21:59,520
it makes three different parts

450
00:21:59,555 --> 00:22:01,884
altogether

451
00:22:01,919 --> 00:22:03,520
any idea how many would take to make up

452
00:22:03,555 --> 00:22:04,925
at least one of the bombs

453
00:22:04,960 --> 00:22:07,200
no way to tell yet they'd still need a

454
00:22:07,235 --> 00:22:08,524
critical mass

455
00:22:08,559 --> 00:22:10,359
the heart of the bomb mr williams the

456
00:22:10,394 --> 00:22:12,159
actual element that produces the nuclear

457
00:22:12,194 --> 00:22:13,325
chain reaction

458
00:22:13,360 --> 00:22:16,685
either plutonium or uranium-235

459
00:22:16,720 --> 00:22:19,400
and that's it it would be good to know

460
00:22:19,435 --> 00:22:22,080
how close they are to the real thing

461
00:22:22,115 --> 00:22:27,840
well that's your department

462
00:22:31,600 --> 00:22:33,644
how's it going same spiel different

463
00:22:33,679 --> 00:22:35,279
words i got stopped by another newspaper

464
00:22:35,314 --> 00:22:36,880
man i don't know how much longer we'll

465
00:22:36,915 --> 00:22:37,805
be able to stall them

466
00:22:37,840 --> 00:22:39,560
as long as we have to we've enough to do

467
00:22:39,595 --> 00:22:41,077
without throwing the public into a panic

468
00:22:41,112 --> 00:22:42,635
it's getting tougher we've got them all

469
00:22:42,670 --> 00:22:44,124
the way from virginia to new mexico

470
00:22:44,159 --> 00:22:46,359
you can add a pennant to connecticut too

471
00:22:46,394 --> 00:22:48,559
what this time it's one of our own subs

472
00:22:48,594 --> 00:22:51,245
docked in at new london

473
00:22:51,280 --> 00:22:53,280
with uranium welded onto the hull below

474
00:22:53,315 --> 00:22:55,004
the water line

475
00:22:55,039 --> 00:22:58,799
uranium how soon does dr hallman figure

476
00:22:58,834 --> 00:22:59,965
they'll be ready for that

477
00:23:00,000 --> 00:23:01,800
too soon and here's another little item

478
00:23:01,835 --> 00:23:03,600
to mull over the stuff was removed in

479
00:23:03,635 --> 00:23:04,925
spite of the guards

480
00:23:04,960 --> 00:23:06,759
no one saw anything just the wound in

481
00:23:06,794 --> 00:23:08,559
the ship a geiger counter told them what

482
00:23:08,594 --> 00:23:09,725
had been there

483
00:23:09,760 --> 00:23:11,760
where was the sub in from marseille

484
00:23:11,795 --> 00:23:12,925
france

485
00:23:12,960 --> 00:23:14,600
was that the only port you touched the

486
00:23:14,635 --> 00:23:16,240
last time out no two others before

487
00:23:16,275 --> 00:23:18,285
france

488
00:23:18,320 --> 00:23:20,239
since we haven't been able to make any

489
00:23:20,274 --> 00:23:22,159
contact locally why not try it through

490
00:23:22,194 --> 00:23:23,085
the source

491
00:23:23,120 --> 00:23:27,079
what source the way i see it

492
00:23:27,114 --> 00:23:31,004
france why pinpoint france

493
00:23:31,039 --> 00:23:32,320
because that's where the belly of the

494
00:23:32,355 --> 00:23:34,205
octopus lives

495
00:23:34,240 --> 00:23:35,520
look at the tentacles and where they're

496
00:23:35,555 --> 00:23:37,805
reaching from marseille

497
00:23:37,840 --> 00:23:39,759
france the last port the sub touched

498
00:23:39,794 --> 00:23:41,679
before coming here with uranium on the

499
00:23:41,714 --> 00:23:42,285
hull

500
00:23:42,320 --> 00:23:44,559
previous to that dr lisbon what about

501
00:23:44,594 --> 00:23:46,799
the metal suitcase we picked out of that

502
00:23:46,834 --> 00:23:48,845
hot rod crash in new mexico

503
00:23:48,880 --> 00:23:50,360
we've since learned it happened 10 days

504
00:23:50,395 --> 00:23:52,357
after a french boat with a marseille

505
00:23:52,392 --> 00:23:54,320
registration dr tampico but nothing says

506
00:23:54,355 --> 00:23:55,805
the boy was in tampico

507
00:23:55,840 --> 00:23:57,400
what about the sailor we picked up with

508
00:23:57,435 --> 00:23:58,997
one of the parts he was shipped home

509
00:23:59,032 --> 00:24:00,524
from somewhere in southern france

510
00:24:00,559 --> 00:24:02,319
i hadn't even stationed in north africa

511
00:24:02,354 --> 00:24:04,080
before that just the same it adds up to

512
00:24:04,115 --> 00:24:05,244
a common denominator

513
00:24:05,279 --> 00:24:06,879
if there's any one place the belly of

514
00:24:06,914 --> 00:24:08,480
the octopus is cradled it could be right

515
00:24:08,515 --> 00:24:09,725
there

516
00:24:09,760 --> 00:24:13,080
so you figure a roping job my daughter

517
00:24:13,115 --> 00:24:16,117
partly all right let's hear your idea

518
00:24:16,152 --> 00:24:19,120
order the sub back to marseille one of

519
00:24:19,155 --> 00:24:19,965
our men on it

520
00:24:20,000 --> 00:24:22,240
yes sir might just be they'll try to use

521
00:24:22,275 --> 00:24:24,524
the sub again

522
00:24:24,559 --> 00:24:27,120
sounds reasonable we got familiar with

523
00:24:27,155 --> 00:24:27,965
navy

524
00:24:28,000 --> 00:24:31,360
oh loman sperry goldman he should have

525
00:24:31,395 --> 00:24:33,325
picked navy instead of air force

526
00:24:33,360 --> 00:24:35,040
well they also look the same yeah only

527
00:24:35,075 --> 00:24:36,720
one of them knows the difference between

528
00:24:36,755 --> 00:24:39,004
the bridge and the galley

529
00:24:39,039 --> 00:24:41,079
suppose i were assigned to some special

530
00:24:41,114 --> 00:24:44,037
duty like the preparation of a motion

531
00:24:44,072 --> 00:24:46,796
picture short on the operation of a sub

532
00:24:46,831 --> 00:24:49,520
what do you think you might get by that

533
00:24:49,555 --> 00:24:50,205
way

534
00:24:50,240 --> 00:24:51,440
wouldn't have to take an active part as

535
00:24:51,475 --> 00:24:54,045
a sailor all right williams

536
00:24:54,080 --> 00:24:56,000
get yourself another name and a couple

537
00:24:56,035 --> 00:24:57,565
of manuals on training films

538
00:24:57,600 --> 00:25:01,840
i'll see about a commission for you

539
00:25:21,440 --> 00:25:23,440
ensign pete is reporting for duty sir at

540
00:25:23,475 --> 00:25:24,764
ease mr peters

541
00:25:24,799 --> 00:25:27,279
nice to have you aboard thank you sir

542
00:25:27,314 --> 00:25:29,217
training film on the operation of a sub

543
00:25:29,252 --> 00:25:31,120
but we've got the equipment and the

544
00:25:31,155 --> 00:25:32,845
personnel yes

545
00:25:32,880 --> 00:25:33,760
we'll see that you get all the

546
00:25:33,795 --> 00:25:36,559
cooperation you need

547
00:25:36,594 --> 00:25:43,840
thank you sir

548
00:26:22,480 --> 00:26:26,365
marseille waterfront old port

549
00:26:26,400 --> 00:26:29,600
gateway to southern france crossroads

550
00:26:29,635 --> 00:26:31,725
for seamen of all nations

551
00:26:31,760 --> 00:26:33,760
a melting pot for some without a country

552
00:26:33,795 --> 00:26:37,950
to call their own

553
00:26:50,840 --> 00:26:52,770
so

554
00:27:25,120 --> 00:27:26,960
several of our men are already stationed

555
00:27:26,995 --> 00:27:28,605
about the submarine base

556
00:27:28,640 --> 00:27:30,799
good i want to get started right away

557
00:27:30,834 --> 00:27:33,004
andre he'll work with you

558
00:27:33,039 --> 00:27:35,520
you probably will need an interpreter i

559
00:27:35,555 --> 00:27:36,124
sure will

560
00:27:36,159 --> 00:27:39,165
we'll hit it off okay pal

561
00:27:39,200 --> 00:27:41,520
that sounds real american it is young is

562
00:27:41,555 --> 00:27:45,120
new york the name's really andy

563
00:27:45,360 --> 00:27:47,920
how was a trip across uneventful not

564
00:27:47,955 --> 00:27:49,937
much more to report from this end except

565
00:27:49,972 --> 00:27:51,906
assurances that the french will give us

566
00:27:51,941 --> 00:27:53,840
a free hand in this case and they'll do

567
00:27:53,875 --> 00:27:55,085

632
00:32:21,381 --> 00:32:23,440

dishonorable discharge any pictures on

635

thanks captain i'll see that these are

638
00:32:38,915 --> 00:32:41,965
returned to you

639
00:32:42,000 --> 00:32:43,440
well this is important dave i'm trying

640
00:32:43,475 --> 00:32:45,325
to get a line on olin well

641
00:32:45,360 --> 00:32:47,360
uh he was a kind of a moody character i

642
00:32:47,395 --> 00:32:48,925
don't mean that

643
00:32:48,960 --> 00:32:50,960
when did he tell you he was leaving was

644
00:32:50,995 --> 00:32:52,605
just did he didn't

645
00:32:52,640 --> 00:32:54,559
i would have known about it except i

646
00:32:54,594 --> 00:32:56,124
owed him a couple days salary

647
00:32:56,159 --> 00:32:57,760
did he have any reason anyone sick at

648
00:32:57,795 --> 00:32:59,484
home or anything ah not

649
00:32:59,519 --> 00:33:03,279
buzz just got restless had a good solid

650
00:33:03,314 --> 00:33:04,845
job

651
00:33:04,880 --> 00:33:07,440
had lots of jobs never stuck to any of

652
00:33:07,475 --> 00:33:08,205
them

653
00:33:08,240 --> 00:33:10,640
did you take him to the plane yeah and

654
00:33:10,675 --> 00:33:11,565
me and the waynes

655
00:33:11,600 --> 00:33:13,520
they're his pals very close well she's

656
00:33:13,555 --> 00:33:15,440
the one who first gave me the knockdown

657
00:33:15,475 --> 00:33:16,685
of the guy

658
00:33:16,720 --> 00:33:19,120
as a matter of fact he left me in a spot

659
00:33:19,155 --> 00:33:21,644
not even a chance to replace him

660
00:33:21,679 --> 00:33:24,279
i tried to talk him out of it up to the

661
00:33:24,314 --> 00:33:26,880
minute the plane left early this morning

662
00:33:26,915 --> 00:33:30,364
did he have much luggage buzz

663
00:33:30,399 --> 00:33:32,000
only owns a suit in his back and a

664
00:33:32,035 --> 00:33:33,484
couple licorice sticks

665
00:33:33,519 --> 00:33:34,839
do you happen to know where he bought

666
00:33:34,874 --> 00:33:36,159
the metal case he carries his clarinet

667
00:33:36,194 --> 00:33:37,725
in

668
00:33:37,760 --> 00:33:41,440
i haven't any idea have the wayne's been

669
00:33:41,475 --> 00:33:42,845
around since he left

670
00:33:42,880 --> 00:33:45,120
not tonight but the only drop in about

671
00:33:45,155 --> 00:33:46,845
11.

672
00:33:46,880 --> 00:33:50,960
one thing more dave i haven't been here

673
00:33:50,995 --> 00:34:07,840
gotcha thanks

674
00:34:21,199 --> 00:34:24,159
slippery boy we'll check all the luggage

675
00:34:24,194 --> 00:34:24,684
shops

676
00:34:24,719 --> 00:34:26,000
see if we can find out who made that

677
00:34:26,035 --> 00:34:35,405
clarinet case for mr olen

678
00:34:35,440 --> 00:34:37,079
while williams andre and the french

679
00:34:37,114 --> 00:34:38,957
police searched the noisy streets

680
00:34:38,992 --> 00:34:40,800
the narrow waterfront double checking

681
00:34:40,835 --> 00:34:42,925
every luggage maker in marseille

682
00:34:42,960 --> 00:34:45,918
back home the fuse was burning closer

683
00:34:45,953 --> 00:34:49,804
more parts

684
00:34:49,839 --> 00:34:52,960
more pins in the map

685
00:34:53,520 --> 00:34:56,879
more questioning and more midnight oil

686
00:34:56,914 --> 00:35:01,930
being burned

687
00:35:13,040 --> 00:35:14,760
this was the place they looked for this

688
00:35:14,795 --> 00:35:16,317
was the man who made the metal cases

689
00:35:16,352 --> 00:35:17,839
used to sneak out in parts into the

690
00:35:17,874 --> 00:35:20,560
united states

691
00:35:25,040 --> 00:35:26,939
looks like he run into something here he

692
00:35:26,974 --> 00:35:30,046
made up 48 of the specifications for a

693
00:35:30,081 --> 00:35:33,119
customer ask him where he delivered them

694
00:35:35,280 --> 00:35:38,560
no good truck

695
00:35:38,800 --> 00:35:40,240
ask him if the customer that ordered the

696
00:35:40,275 --> 00:35:45,839
cases is one of these

697
00:36:06,880 --> 00:36:10,920
just that he cooperates with the police

698
00:36:10,955 --> 00:36:14,197
all he could tell us was that someone

699
00:36:14,232 --> 00:36:16,675
had ordered 48 identical metal cases

700
00:36:16,710 --> 00:36:19,119
and he identified buzz olin as having

701
00:36:19,154 --> 00:36:20,445
ordered an additional four

702
00:36:20,480 --> 00:36:22,320
but he did identify leo wayne no he

703
00:36:22,355 --> 00:36:24,377
didn't but with allen's disappearance

704
00:36:24,412 --> 00:36:26,400
leo wayne is our only lead just because

705
00:36:26,435 --> 00:36:27,804
there were friends

706
00:36:27,839 --> 00:36:29,520
add that to the fact that leo and margo

707
00:36:29,555 --> 00:36:30,640
wayne were seen around the cafe

708
00:36:30,675 --> 00:36:31,965
continually

709
00:36:32,000 --> 00:36:33,280
and their friends were all a part of

710
00:36:33,315 --> 00:36:35,005
that special list you gave me

711
00:36:35,040 --> 00:36:36,480
also he's been seen hanging around the

712
00:36:36,515 --> 00:36:38,125
submarine area

713
00:36:38,160 --> 00:36:39,800
and it's more than just a coincidence

714
00:36:39,835 --> 00:36:41,440
that buzz olin ordered four identical

715
00:36:41,475 --> 00:36:42,880
metal cases when he only has one

716
00:36:42,915 --> 00:36:43,645
clarinet

717
00:36:43,680 --> 00:36:46,560
why don't you pick wayne up then because

718
00:36:46,595 --> 00:36:48,525
we don't have enough on him

719
00:36:48,560 --> 00:36:50,000
but i'm more than convinced that he's

720
00:36:50,035 --> 00:36:51,377
tied into this there were no metal

721
00:36:51,412 --> 00:36:52,666
suitcases in fact nothing of any

722
00:36:52,701 --> 00:36:53,920
importance when we searched the

723
00:36:53,955 --> 00:36:54,845
department

724
00:36:54,880 --> 00:36:56,240
then what was he doing hanging around

725
00:36:56,275 --> 00:36:58,125
the sub the subject curiosity

726
00:36:58,160 --> 00:37:00,280
hundreds of people come down to the dock

727
00:37:00,315 --> 00:37:02,197
every day if buzz old and ordered four

728
00:37:02,232 --> 00:37:03,795
identical metal cases then he or a

729
00:37:03,830 --> 00:37:05,355
friend must have had something to do

730
00:37:05,390 --> 00:37:06,880
with sneaking the uranium onto the hull

731
00:37:06,915 --> 00:37:08,365
of the ship well if it is

732
00:37:08,400 --> 00:37:10,160
it must have got someone to work with

733
00:37:10,195 --> 00:37:12,697
someone right on the submarine

734
00:37:12,732 --> 00:37:15,165
exactly how do we draw them out

735
00:37:15,200 --> 00:37:18,160
we just wait there's no time we've got

736
00:37:18,195 --> 00:37:20,839
to force them into the open

737
00:37:20,874 --> 00:37:23,005
how

738
00:37:23,040 --> 00:37:24,560
they probably think the submarine will

739
00:37:24,595 --> 00:37:27,564
remain here for a while

740
00:37:27,599 --> 00:37:30,640
we'll have it ordered back unexpectedly

741
00:37:30,675 --> 00:37:31,885
if they plan to use the sub again

742
00:37:31,920 --> 00:37:33,920
they'll have to do it right away that be

743
00:37:33,955 --> 00:37:35,165
fools

744
00:37:35,200 --> 00:37:39,839
maybe they think we are it's your show

745
00:37:42,400 --> 00:37:45,200
code this message

746
00:37:47,599 --> 00:37:49,359
attention security investigation

747
00:37:49,394 --> 00:37:51,839
division

748
00:37:52,240 --> 00:38:05,839
chief reagan

749
00:38:54,800 --> 00:38:58,560
that's just it tomorrow and then the day

750
00:38:58,595 --> 00:39:01,217
you're after goodbye of our country just

751
00:39:01,252 --> 00:39:03,839
beginning to have fun when we get called

752
00:39:03,874 --> 00:39:04,365
back

753
00:39:04,400 --> 00:39:06,240
see that's too bad well maybe i'll be

754
00:39:06,275 --> 00:39:07,725
back again

755
00:39:07,760 --> 00:39:11,120
maybe we'll all meet again in america

756
00:39:11,155 --> 00:39:14,480
i drink to that to the next time we meet

757
00:39:14,515 --> 00:39:29,839
on either side of the atlantic

758
00:40:15,760 --> 00:40:17,280
the courier flies out in the morning

759
00:40:17,315 --> 00:40:18,765

764
00:40:42,480 --> 00:40:45,839
margo we had her cold microfilm probably

765
00:40:45,874 --> 00:40:48,800
the whole setup on it

766
00:40:49,599 --> 00:40:51,719
she handed that microfilm to a semen

767
00:40:51,754 --> 00:40:53,839

768
00:40:53,874 --> 00:40:55,405

805
00:43:48,915 --> 00:43:50,845
cases

806
00:43:50,880 --> 00:43:55,580

826
00:45:47,075 --> 00:45:49,324
yourself

827
00:45:49,359 --> 00:45:53,040
even the security investigation division

828
00:45:53,075 --> 00:45:56,800
how far does your rotten arm reach

829
00:45:57,599 --> 00:45:59,119
what kind of an accident do you have

830
00:45:59,154 --> 00:46:01,839
plan for me

831
00:46:02,480 --> 00:46:05,359
or am i just going to disappear no

832
00:46:05,394 --> 00:46:09,040
traces no clues nothing

833
00:46:11,040 --> 00:46:12,839
maybe next time around we'll have better

834
00:46:12,874 --> 00:46:14,365
luck

835
00:46:14,400 --> 00:46:17,119

um

841
00:48:18,839 --> 00:48:21,839
um

842
00:48:49,839 --> 00:49:03,839
hey come on

843
00:49:22,800 --> 00:49:25,359
quite a setup you've got here right in

844
00:49:25,394 --> 00:49:27,324
our own backyard

845
00:49:27,359 --> 00:49:30,799
take it easy fella imagine having the

846
00:49:30,834 --> 00:49:34,057
organization right here in washington

847
00:49:34,092 --> 00:49:37,280
where have you got it the capital

848
00:49:37,315 --> 00:49:45,839
is it the capital itself

849
00:50:10,839 --> 00:50:11,950
so

850
00:51:03,040 --> 00:51:05,200
hello well this is williams give me

851
00:51:05,235 --> 00:51:06,800
regan right away

852
00:51:06,835 --> 00:51:07,480
where

853
00:51:20,640 --> 00:51:22,720
mr regan anderson peters jumped out of

854
00:51:22,755 --> 00:51:24,205
the car and escaped

855
00:51:24,240 --> 00:51:26,800
pick him up a drugstore just off g

856
00:51:26,835 --> 00:51:27,885
street

857
00:51:27,920 --> 00:51:37,839
vons off g street right

858
00:52:30,839 --> 00:52:33,839
so

859
00:52:39,680 --> 00:52:42,079
great we're looking for him he's looking

860
00:52:42,114 --> 00:52:43,084
for us

861
00:52:43,119 --> 00:52:47,079
which came first the chicken of it

862
00:52:47,114 --> 00:52:51,040
mr williams is here sir send him in

863
00:52:58,800 --> 00:53:02,640
bad time yes sir

864
00:53:07,440 --> 00:53:15,839
come on sit down and relax jimmy

865
00:53:16,880 --> 00:53:19,599
you've been part of a war game the most

866
00:53:19,634 --> 00:53:22,577
vital one this country has ever had

867
00:53:22,612 --> 00:53:25,066
war game to test our atomic defenses

868
00:53:25,101 --> 00:53:27,520
and you hit on the answer before we were

869
00:53:27,555 --> 00:53:29,005
ready

870
00:53:29,040 --> 00:53:30,720
you mean commander jackson and enson

871
00:53:30,755 --> 00:53:32,044
mcgrew were the enemy

872
00:53:32,079 --> 00:53:34,480
that's right commander jackson is our

873
00:53:34,515 --> 00:53:36,284
expert on atomic demolition

874
00:53:36,319 --> 00:53:37,599
and you discovered i was the one who

875
00:53:37,634 --> 00:53:39,645
ordered the metal cases

876
00:53:39,680 --> 00:53:41,600
did you know this all the time hadn't

877
00:53:41,635 --> 00:53:43,697
the slightest idea until you cabled for

878
00:53:43,732 --> 00:53:46,425
permission to arrest jackson and mcgrew

879
00:53:46,460 --> 00:53:48,509
then we were informed it was a war game

880
00:53:48,544 --> 00:53:50,712
and why did you keep me captive on the

881
00:53:50,747 --> 00:53:52,880
sub couldn't give it away until the game

882
00:53:52,915 --> 00:53:55,084
was over and we knew how we stood

883
00:53:55,119 --> 00:53:57,839
for a while there it looked as though we

884
00:53:57,874 --> 00:54:00,017
had no defense against the real thing

885
00:54:00,052 --> 00:54:02,160
but it's finished now johnny and you did

886
00:54:02,195 --> 00:54:04,524
a great job

887
00:54:04,559 --> 00:54:06,799
that torn sleeve we weren't staked out

888
00:54:06,834 --> 00:54:08,696
for you i was slipping to last uranium

889
00:54:08,731 --> 00:54:10,559
aboard the sub when i ran into you and

890
00:54:10,594 --> 00:54:12,284
andre on a dock

891
00:54:12,319 --> 00:54:14,720
couldn't take a chance for a game you

892
00:54:14,755 --> 00:54:15,965
play pretty rough

893
00:54:16,000 --> 00:54:17,919
sneaking atom bombs into the country is

894
00:54:17,954 --> 00:54:19,839
a rough business look at that hot rod

895
00:54:19,874 --> 00:54:21,084
kid jonesy

896
00:54:21,119 --> 00:54:24,240
wargames accidents happen and the whole

897
00:54:24,275 --> 00:54:25,645
thing was make-believe

898
00:54:25,680 --> 00:54:27,600
even the suspects we picked up most of

899
00:54:27,635 --> 00:54:29,520
the military personnel trained for the

900
00:54:29,555 --> 00:54:31,324
job and let loose

901
00:54:31,359 --> 00:54:35,879
48 of them to be exact 48

902
00:54:35,914 --> 00:54:40,400
48 bags one for each state

903
00:54:40,435 --> 00:54:43,520
kind of symbolic huh

904
00:54:43,680 --> 00:54:45,359
48th man wasn't picked up till an hour

905
00:54:45,394 --> 00:54:46,925
ago

906
00:54:46,960 --> 00:54:50,720
who was it buzz olin or leo wayne

907
00:54:50,755 --> 00:54:53,457
neither one wasn't all in the man you

908
00:54:53,492 --> 00:54:56,066
want to check an arrival in new york

909
00:54:56,101 --> 00:54:58,640
that's right well your request arrived

910
00:54:58,675 --> 00:54:59,965
after he did

911
00:55:00,000 --> 00:55:01,680
we still got a search order out for him

912
00:55:01,715 --> 00:55:03,885
who is this wayne

913
00:55:03,920 --> 00:55:07,885
leo wayne huh he's not on here

914
00:55:07,920 --> 00:55:09,520
i'm not surprised because he's not a

915
00:55:09,555 --> 00:55:11,965
part of your war game

916
00:55:12,000 --> 00:55:13,960
that's right buzz olin ordered four

917
00:55:13,995 --> 00:55:15,597
identical metal cases and brought three

918
00:55:15,632 --> 00:55:17,200
of them into this country with parts for

919
00:55:17,235 --> 00:55:19,165
an atom bomb

920
00:55:19,200 --> 00:55:20,880
when leo wayne meets up with buzz olen

921
00:55:20,915 --> 00:55:21,760
there's going to be the biggest

922
00:55:21,795 --> 00:55:23,564
explosion you ever heard

923
00:55:23,599 --> 00:55:25,200
because leo wayne brought in the plans

924
00:55:25,235 --> 00:55:27,324
for the assembly of that bomb

925
00:55:27,359 --> 00:55:28,639
that's what i've been trying to tell you

926
00:55:28,674 --> 00:55:29,977
all the time i was cooped up in the sub

927
00:55:30,012 --> 00:55:31,280
and playing hide and seek trying to get

928
00:55:31,315 --> 00:55:31,645
here

929
00:55:31,680 --> 00:55:33,320
are you certain the name leo wayne means

930
00:55:33,355 --> 00:55:34,960
nothing to the war games there's no one

931
00:55:34,995 --> 00:55:36,365
by that name in the overall plan

932
00:55:36,400 --> 00:55:38,160
and no one by the name of margo wayne

933
00:55:38,195 --> 00:55:39,857
either while we were playing games they

934
00:55:39,892 --> 00:55:41,520
were playing for keeps operating behind

935
00:55:41,555 --> 00:55:43,084
the screen we had set up

936
00:55:43,119 --> 00:55:45,439
they even penetrated your own crew i saw

937
00:55:45,474 --> 00:55:47,760
margo wayne hand microfilm to one of the

938
00:55:47,795 --> 00:55:48,205
seamen

939
00:55:48,240 --> 00:55:50,039
you sure you're not mistaking the games

940
00:55:50,074 --> 00:55:51,797
for the real thing check for yourself

941
00:55:51,832 --> 00:55:54,036
have margot wing picked up the luggage

942
00:55:54,071 --> 00:55:56,240
maker too he made 52 of those cases 48

943
00:55:56,275 --> 00:55:57,885
for you and four for buzz olen

944
00:55:57,920 --> 00:55:59,760
get through to marseille yes sir you

945
00:55:59,795 --> 00:56:01,245
said something about microfilm

946
00:56:01,280 --> 00:56:03,039
then the plans for the assembly of the

947
00:56:03,074 --> 00:56:04,799
bomb must be on that film that's right

948
00:56:04,834 --> 00:56:08,205
that's a myth is it

949
00:56:08,240 --> 00:56:10,079
i've lost track of the days what day is

950
00:56:10,114 --> 00:56:11,965
it this is sunday night why

951
00:56:12,000 --> 00:56:14,160
because on tuesday at 3 p. m that bomb

952
00:56:14,195 --> 00:56:17,839
becomes real

953
00:56:40,240 --> 00:56:42,000
they still haven't been able to find the

954
00:56:42,035 --> 00:56:43,657
woman we haven't got much time we've got

955
00:56:43,692 --> 00:56:45,280
to locate wayne and olin before noon

956
00:56:45,315 --> 00:56:45,804
tomorrow

957
00:56:45,839 --> 00:56:48,845
how margo's contact on the sub

958
00:56:48,880 --> 00:56:50,559
it wasn't you could have been somebody

959
00:56:50,594 --> 00:56:51,897
else in on the war game commander

960
00:56:51,932 --> 00:56:53,200
jackson and i were the only ones from

961
00:56:53,235 --> 00:56:54,925
the sub in on the game

962
00:56:54,960 --> 00:56:57,480
and it has to be the seaman he should

963
00:56:57,515 --> 00:56:59,797
know where wayne and older headquartered

964
00:56:59,832 --> 00:57:02,036
i can't believe it's one of my crew if

965
00:57:02,071 --> 00:57:04,240
he's right we have less than 24 hours to

966
00:57:04,275 --> 00:57:04,925
get to them

967
00:57:04,960 --> 00:57:06,559
cancel on liberty order all hands back

968
00:57:06,594 --> 00:57:13,839
on board immediately hi sir

969
00:57:20,960 --> 00:57:27,839
has made on harm

970
00:57:30,400 --> 00:57:33,280
report one absence sir pharmacist mate

971
00:57:33,315 --> 00:57:37,577
owen harmon

972
00:57:37,612 --> 00:57:41,839
this mr

973
00:57:52,839 --> 00:57:55,839
maybe

974
00:57:56,559 --> 00:57:58,199
we question and double-check the entire

975
00:57:58,234 --> 00:57:59,837
crew except for the missing pharmacist

976
00:57:59,872 --> 00:58:01,376
mate and i'm satisfied all hands are in

977
00:58:01,411 --> 00:58:02,945
the clear then it could be the missing

978
00:58:02,980 --> 00:58:04,529
pharmacist mate owen harmon it's the

979
00:58:04,564 --> 00:58:06,081
only possibility but i don't see

980
00:58:06,116 --> 00:58:07,857
did he have access to any personal

981
00:58:07,892 --> 00:58:09,599
papers no all he did was keep williams

982
00:58:09,634 --> 00:58:10,925
out of commission under my orders

983
00:58:10,960 --> 00:58:13,159
no family or relatives none listed order

984
00:58:13,194 --> 00:58:15,359
an all-out search for this man at once

985
00:58:15,394 --> 00:58:17,165
yes

986
00:58:17,200 --> 00:58:19,320
by six o'clock monday evening they had

987
00:58:19,355 --> 00:58:21,837
tossed every spot of sale on my fancy

988
00:58:21,872 --> 00:58:23,735
then at 1010 p. m the body of a trusted

989
00:58:23,770 --> 00:58:25,599
pharmacist mate was spaced out of the

990
00:58:25,634 --> 00:58:26,685
potomac

991
00:58:26,720 --> 00:58:29,440
a wire about his throat and somewhere

992
00:58:29,475 --> 00:58:30,845
there was an a-bomb

993
00:58:30,880 --> 00:58:33,200
assembled loaded and ready waiting for

994
00:58:33,235 --> 00:58:35,520
enough precious seconds to be chopped

995
00:58:35,555 --> 00:58:37,005
away

996
00:58:37,040 --> 00:58:39,599
tomorrow would be tuesday another normal

997
00:58:39,634 --> 00:58:41,485
day in the life of a city

998
00:58:41,520 --> 00:58:44,960
that is until three o'clock in the

999
00:58:48,839 --> 00:58:51,839
afternoon

1000
00:58:52,240 --> 00:58:56,079
margo strangled same pattern same

1001
00:58:56,114 --> 00:58:56,605
methods

1002
00:58:56,640 --> 00:58:58,239
one of silence to keep him from tipping

1003
00:58:58,274 --> 00:58:59,839
his mitt the other because she already

1004
00:58:59,874 --> 00:59:00,524
tipped hers

1005
00:59:00,559 --> 00:59:03,440
that makes it complete no leads no hopes

1006
00:59:03,475 --> 00:59:03,804
all

1007
00:59:03,839 --> 00:59:05,679
errors and only two chances out of 160

1008
00:59:05,714 --> 00:59:07,520
million of ever catching up with we are

1009
00:59:07,555 --> 00:59:10,937
wayne or buzz orlan

1010
00:59:10,972 --> 00:59:14,319

1014
00:59:19,874 --> 00:59:23,280

1015

00:59:27,200 --> 00:59:28,600
we'll find out which locally belongs to

1018
00:59:28,635 --> 00:59:30,000
they may be able to give us a lead on

1019
00:59:30,035 --> 00:59:31,725
where to reach him

1020
00:59:31,760 --> 00:59:33,520
mr james c petrillo president of the

1021
00:59:33,555 --> 00:59:35,057
american federation of musicians

1022
00:59:35,092 --> 00:59:36,746
instructed the officials of the san

1023
00:59:36,781 --> 00:59:38,400
francisco local to cooperate fully with

1024
00:59:38,435 --> 00:59:39,804
the investigation

1025
00:59:39,839 --> 00:59:42,079

1026
00:59:42,114 --> 00:59:43,485

1027
00:59:43,520 --> 00:59:45,960
yes here it is he was out of town and he

1028
00:59:45,995 --> 00:59:48,717
left a number for mr harrison to call

1029
00:59:48,752 --> 00:59:51,440
long distance operator seven eight

1030
00:59:51,475 --> 00:59:54,720

1032
00:59:57,555 --> 00:59:59,245

rollins thank you very much

1034
01:00:20,799 --> 01:00:22,960
keeps to himself mostly used to teach

1035
01:00:22,995 --> 01:00:24,605
high school until he quit

1036
01:00:24,640 --> 01:00:26,400
runs a sort of uh rest home for a few

1037
01:00:26,435 --> 01:00:28,044
people now manning

1038
01:00:28,079 --> 01:00:30,160
you and reynolds go on that way clark

1039
01:00:30,195 --> 01:00:31,245
hanson

1040
01:00:31,280 --> 01:00:32,799
you two stay put come on let's take a

1041
01:00:32,834 --> 01:00:43,839
look at mr rollins guests

1042
01:00:56,960 --> 01:01:11,839
you stay here

1043
01:01:22,839 --> 01:01:25,839
so

1044
01:01:29,680 --> 01:01:32,559
fresh tire tracks follow them we see

1045
01:01:32,594 --> 01:01:38,284
where they lead

1046
01:01:38,319 --> 01:01:40,279
across the bay from san francisco 10

1047
01:01:40,314 --> 01:01:42,240
miles from this innocent little ranch

1048
01:01:42,275 --> 01:01:42,925
house

1049
01:01:42,960 --> 01:01:45,839
like the calm before the storm a city

1050
01:01:45,874 --> 01:01:47,885
awakening and getting underway

1051
01:01:47,920 --> 01:01:50,720
the sun climbing higher in the sky and

1052
01:01:50,755 --> 01:01:53,324
only a handful know the truth

1053
01:01:53,359 --> 01:01:55,920
but where do you go what do you do in an

1054
01:01:55,955 --> 01:01:57,965
emergency of this sort

1055
01:01:58,000 --> 01:02:00,000
is it the presidio that houses the bomb

1056
01:02:00,035 --> 01:02:02,000
is the golden gate bridge the focal

1057
01:02:02,035 --> 01:02:03,564
point of attack

1058
01:02:03,599 --> 01:02:06,720
or is it the embarcadero san francisco

1059
01:02:06,755 --> 01:02:07,245
harbor

1060
01:02:07,280 --> 01:02:10,160
doorway to pacific traffic the ideal

1061
01:02:10,195 --> 01:02:12,125
place for a bottleneck

1062
01:02:12,160 --> 01:02:14,880
or the people themselves the very people

1063
01:02:14,915 --> 01:02:17,405
in their parks

1064
01:02:17,440 --> 01:02:22,880
their streets their homes

1065
01:02:23,039 --> 01:02:24,480
and across the bay from the city the

1066
01:02:24,515 --> 01:02:26,817
search went on

1067
01:02:26,852 --> 01:02:29,119
time and a premium

1068
01:02:33,039 --> 01:02:34,400
i'm glad to show you what it looks like

1069
01:02:34,435 --> 01:02:36,799
inside

1070
01:02:37,520 --> 01:02:39,119
i always did want to know what old ice

1071
01:02:39,154 --> 01:02:41,725
houses were good for

1072
01:02:41,760 --> 01:02:46,640
now you know where's leo buzz

1073
01:02:46,839 --> 01:02:49,165
terror

1074
01:02:49,200 --> 01:02:52,524
no go ahead big hero

1075
01:02:52,559 --> 01:02:54,519
figuring on bringing your friends

1076
01:02:54,554 --> 01:02:56,445
running huh you're a little late

1077
01:02:56,480 --> 01:02:58,400
leo's delivering that prize package but

1078
01:02:58,435 --> 01:03:00,839
no one's ever gonna find you

1079
01:03:00,874 --> 01:03:03,839
hero

1080
01:03:28,480 --> 01:03:31,039
i'll tell you where is he all right all

1081
01:03:31,074 --> 01:03:32,487
right

1082
01:03:32,522 --> 01:03:33,900
all right

1083
01:03:38,319 --> 01:03:40,240
he's moving it in a black sedan headed

1084
01:03:40,275 --> 01:03:41,599
for a private airport beyond the

1085
01:03:41,634 --> 01:03:42,605
embarcadero

1086
01:03:42,640 --> 01:03:44,800
block all bridge approaches leading to

1087
01:03:44,835 --> 01:03:46,960
san francisco proceed with care leo

1088
01:03:46,995 --> 01:03:48,400
wayne is armed

1089
01:03:48,435 --> 01:03:50,799
got that

1090
01:03:52,480 --> 01:03:54,200
right have a car meet us at the county

1091
01:03:54,235 --> 01:03:55,837
line i want to transfer a prisoner and

1092
01:03:55,872 --> 01:03:58,016
tell commander jackson to meet us at the

1093
01:03:58,051 --> 01:04:00,345
airport we have a blueprint of the bomb

1094
01:04:00,380 --> 01:04:02,640
all units vicinity of san francisco

1095
01:04:02,675 --> 01:04:03,725
oakland bay area

1096
01:04:03,760 --> 01:04:06,079
oakland bay bridge golden gate bridge

1097
01:04:06,114 --> 01:04:07,405
attention

1098
01:04:07,440 --> 01:04:09,520
do not attempt to apprehend black sedan

1099
01:04:09,555 --> 01:04:10,764
without assistance

1100
01:04:10,799 --> 01:04:13,920
do not fire on the vehicle proceed with

1101
01:04:13,955 --> 01:04:16,240
caution

1102
01:04:17,599 --> 01:04:19,440
relay all additional information of

1103
01:04:19,475 --> 01:04:21,737
whereabouts to central offices

1104
01:04:21,772 --> 01:04:24,000
it's set to go off at exactly 3 pm

1105
01:04:24,035 --> 01:04:26,764
where's the time mechanism

1106
01:04:26,799 --> 01:04:28,559
here's the trigger just under the casing

1107
01:04:28,594 --> 01:04:30,057
but i'm afraid they crash it first

1108
01:04:30,092 --> 01:04:31,520
before commander jackson gets a chance

1109
01:04:31,555 --> 01:04:41,839
to neutralize it

1110
01:04:48,640 --> 01:04:55,839
there he goes

1111
01:05:09,280 --> 01:05:12,000
car ready to control we picked up black

1112
01:05:12,035 --> 01:05:14,125

1113
01:05:14,160 --> 01:05:16,000
on oakland bay bridge going towards san

1114
01:05:16,035 --> 01:05:18,365
francisco relay instructions

1119
01:05:48,839 --> 01:05:51,839
so

1120
01:06:01,839 --> 01:06:05,599
motorcycle units 411 and 414 have joined

1121
01:06:05,634 --> 01:06:07,165

1151
01:10:56,840 --> 01:10:58,290

1153
01:11:35,520 --> 01:11:45,575
how does it look for three o'clock

1154
01:11:45,610 --> 01:11:55,630
i don't know we're fighting a headwind

1155
01:12:06,480 --> 01:12:09,520
how much time do we have if my watch is

1156
01:12:09,555 --> 01:12:10,045
right

1157
01:12:10,080 --> 01:12:11,090

1159
01:12:40,480 --> 01:12:42,560
and so it was but just within the

1160
01:12:42,595 --> 01:12:44,365
shadows of san francisco

1161
01:12:44,400 --> 01:12:46,880
a band of assassins were cut down before

1162
01:12:46,915 --> 01:12:47,920
they could wreak havoc on the

1163
01:12:47,955 --> 01:12:49,965
unsuspecting people

1164
01:12:50,000 --> 01:12:51,760
and three o'clock is just the middle of

1165
01:12:51,795 --> 01:12:58,267
another afternoon

1166
01:12:58,302 --> 01:13:04,740
in the life of a city

1167
01:13:09,440 --> 01:13:11,520
you
